Monday Morning Motivation | Values Trump Beliefs
The greatest myth about patient education is the notion that success is dependent upon what you say and how you say it.
If it were only that simple.
Few of us change our deepest beliefs based on what others tell us, regardless of its logic. Because behind our beliefs is the real operating system: our values. If a patient places other values above his or her health, such as approval, frugality, pleasure, tradition or countless others, there is little you can say or do to reprioritize them. That probably won’t stop you from trying. But if your experience suggests that this is true, you may want to try a different approach.
Become curious about their beliefs about their body and health. Ask questions to uncover and truly understand their beliefs. The fact is you’ll have little hope of generating interest in your worldview until you first show interest in theirs.
