Monday Morning Motivation | Shiny Objects
It's been observed that these days our attention span is about 8 seconds--about the same as a goldfish.
Whether our fleeting attentions should be blamed on television, the growing proliferation of digital devices or merely an unhealthy interest in the 24-hour news cycle is unclear. Whatever the shiny object that distracts us, we've chosen it volitionally.
After all, consider the pay off of flitting from one thing to the next:
Avoid critical thinking – It's hard work to think deeply, question the talking heads and draw our own conclusions.
Be an insider – You can bask in the social approval given to those who know the latest fashion, the newest music or the most lurid scandal.
Avoid introspection – Being busy can occupy us sufficiently so we don't have to spend time with ourselves or be confronted by the choices we've made.
This week resolve to live life consciously with greater presence.
