Dear Bill...

What brochures do you have that discuss "retracing"? Yesterday, I had patient discontinue care because their symptoms got worse even though we discussed after the 1st adustment.... What would you recommend to discuss this issue of retracing?

I have no brochures that mention retracing.

But here’s what I would say:

“Many times, by the time patients show up in our office, they’ve had their problem for some time.

“One of the things we’ve noticed over the years, is that what prompts many patients to consult our office, is the result of what I call “going around” the problem. Such as taking pain relievers to cover up the symptoms of the underlying problem. Or simply ignoring it, hoping it will resolve on its own. Sometimes this goes on for years.

“So, we’ve noticed an interesting thing. As we begin to address the underlying cause, the original, suppressed symptoms return! It’s almost like “karma”: The problem wasn’t really addressed in the beginning, so now you get a second chance to “go through” the problem. This usually involves experiencing many of the same original symptoms. Now, if this should happen in your case, I hope you don’t blame me, or chiropractic!”

“In fact, this is such a common process, some within chiropractic have even given it a name: retracing. Like “retracing” your steps back to the beginning.

“I can’t predict whether this will be your experience or not, but if it is, let me know and we’ll address it should it come up.”
